Safer Internet Day

Today is Safer Internet Day however this is something we need to be thinking about all of the time. Internet safety is important for everyone and that is why this year's theme is "connecting generations and educating each other."

What may seem like harmless fun or a bit of a joke can actually do more damage than you think. If you are the victim of online bullying, it can often feel as though there is no escape.

The Cybersmart website has information to help you and your friends take the right steps when it comes to online bullying. Their top five tips are:

  • Don't retaliate or respond.
  • Block the person doing the bullying and change your privacy settings.
  • Report it - Click the report abuse button.
  • Collect the evidence - keep mobile phone messages and print emails and social media conversations.
  • Talk to someone you trust, like a family member or friend.

For more information, tips and help have a look at the Cybersmart website and seek help from a teacher or parent. You also may get some good advice from the film Tagged which includes many of the situations teens find themselves in today.
